Animals have always been my passion. From a young age I knew I wanted a career that involved animals in some way. In 2013 I graduated from the University of Guelph with a Major in Animal Biology. After a few summers of working seasonally at the Toronto Zoo, I joined their staff as a full time Zookeeper in 2016. I now spend my days caring for the incredible animals that call the Toronto Zoo home, and am constantly being inspired to capture the magnificence of these animals in art to share them with others.
Art has long since been the other passion in my life. Over the years it has taken many different forms: sketching, photography, wood carving, pyrography, and my more recent focus of acrylic painting.
While my schooling throughout university focused on science and animals, after graduating I enrolled in a studio drawing course through Algonquin College. This course helped me hone my fundamental drawing skills which have been essental to progressing my painting.
When it comes to painting, there has been a lot of trial and error, and I have no doubt that this will continue. I learn something new with every painting I do. I am challenged by my clients who request various styles of art, and it has been an exciting adventure as I slowly explore new styles and techniques and expand my skills.
While painting is definitely my focus at this point in time, I still somehow find time to dable in various eclectic art forms. Check out my Other Works to learn more.
Why are some of my paintings signed differently?
All of the paintings on this site are done by me. However, up until 2017, I was Bethany Vlaming, so my artwork was signed accordingly. Then I had the joy of getting married, and decided to take on my husband's name.
